Description

Tawang is the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left. Sitting at 10,000 feet in the Arunachal highlands, it feels like the spiritual heart of the Eastern Himalayas. The town is anchored by the massive Tawang Monastery, which looks more like a medieval fortress than a temple, watching over the valley below. The drive up is an experience in itself. You’ll cross the Sela Pass at nearly 14,000 feet , where the air is thin and the sacred Sela Lake is often frozen solid before descending into a landscape of colorful prayer flags and hidden glacial lakes. Home to the Monpa people, Tawang is a mix of frozen peaks, thundering waterfalls, quiet faith, and high-altitude air that just feels different. It’s rugged, peaceful, and well worth the long winding road to get there.
